What makes SmartyPaws different than other canine health supplements?

SmartyPaws multifunctional health supplements for dogs were formulated by vets for your dog's individual size and stage of life.

While many other health supplements focus on a single issue or area, our chews were designed to be multifunctional and support your dog’s joint, gut, immune, skin, allergy, urinary tract health and thyroid health - all in one easy serving. Each ingredient was carefully-selected by veterinarians in different regions of the United States to ensure both quality and practicality.

We use premium ingredients without any synthetic colors or flavors. Our formulas are wheat-free, soy-free and dairy-free. They're also free of beef, chicken, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts allergens

Plus, our SmartyPaws chews are certified by the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) to let consumers know that we’re committed to the highest current standards for manufacturing dog health supplements. Look for the NASC Quality Seal on our SmartyPaws pouches.

Who formulated this product? What is their expertise and background?

SmartyPaws is made by the humans at SmartyPants Vitamins. We worked with our internal Veterinary Advisory Board (VAB), some of the brightest and best vets in the industry, to design our custom multifunctional formulas.

The ingredients and amounts used were thoughtfully-selected based on recommendations from our VAB members and industry experts.

How does your new formula differ from the previous SmartyPaws chews I’ve been purchasing?

Our new NASC-certified SmartyPaws formulas are now soy-free and available in a new chicken flavor.

We use an all-natural proprietary blend to create a chicken flavor that pups love, but it contains no bird. All SmartyPaws chews are free of soy, wheat, beef, chicken, eggs, dairy, peanuts, tree nut allergens, synthetic colors and synthetic flavors.

You’ll also notice a change in the number of SmartyPaws skus available. To help make good health for your canine cohabitant even easier, we changed our formulas to now include only a puppy (3 - 12 months), adult (1 - 7 years) and senior (7+ years) chew option. We include directions on each bag on how many chews to give your dog based on their weight.

We worked with some of the top minds in pet health to carefully-select each ingredient so that our chews can offer a number of health benefits - all in one easy serving.

Both our peanut and chicken-flavored skus deliver the same great support for hip, joint, gut, immune, allergy, skin, urinary tract and thyroid health

Because we want your precious pup to live a happy and healthy life at every age.

Aside from the flavor, are there any differences between your peanut butter and chicken-flavored chews?

No. All of our multifunctional formulas were designed by vets to help support overall good health for your canine companion.

We carefully-select each ingredient to support hip, joint, gut, immune, allergy, skin, urinary tract and thyroid health - all in one easy serving.

When it comes to flavor, we use all-natural proprietary blends to create our peanut butter and chicken-flavored chews. However, we also took food sensitivities and allergies into account.

Both formulas are free of soy, wheat, chicken, beef, eggs, dairy, peanuts, tree nut allergens, synthetic colors and synthetic flavors.

Do these contain chicken?

No. We’re no chicken when it comes to flavor. However, we still pass on the poultry when it comes to making our chews because some dogs are sensitive to chicken.

Instead, we use an all-natural proprietary blend to create a chickeny flavor that pups love. Our multifunctional formulas are also free of soy, wheat, beef, eggs, dairy, peanuts, tree nut allergens, synthetic colors and synthetic flavors.

Why don’t you use actual chicken in your chews?

Some dogs have a food sensitivity to chicken. To help them have less belly aches (and more time for belly rubs), our formulas are chicken-free.

Instead, we use an all-natural proprietary blend to create a chickeny flavor that pups love. Our multifunctional formulas are also free of soy, wheat, beef, eggs, dairy, peanuts, tree nut allergens, synthetic colors and synthetic flavors.

How are these chicken flavored without any chicken?

We use a premium, proprietary blend of all-natural ingredients to create a savory chicken flavor that pups love. Our multifunctional formulas are also free of soy, wheat, beef, eggs, dairy, peanuts, tree nut allergens, synthetic colors and synthetic flavors.

Are these soy-free?

Yes. Our SmartyPaws health supplements are soy-free. They’re also free of soy, wheat, beef, chicken, eggs, dairy, peanuts, tree nut allergens, synthetic colors and synthetic flavors.

What defines a small, medium, large and extra-large dog and how many chews do I give them?

We customize our formulas based on the following weights:

  • Small (up to 15 lbs) give 1 chew daily for all ages
  • Medium (16  - 40 lbs) give 2 chews daily for all ages
  • Large (41 - 80 lbs) give 3 chews daily for all ages
  • Extra Large (80+ lbs) give 4 chews daily for all ages

What happens if my dog accidentally eats an entire bag?

Safety is our biggest concern and each batch of finished product is third-party lab tested for quality assurance. While we don’t put anything in our products that could be harmful in large doses, we can’t guarantee the safety of our product above the recommended serving size.

If your dog eats more than the recommended serving and they are experiencing any signs of illness including lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, or other concerning symptoms, we recommend contacting your nearest emergency animal hospital, veterinarian, or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately.

SmartyPants, Inc. is not affiliated with the ASPCA. Be sure to let us know as well by contacting us at woof@smartypawshealth.com.

Will this interfere with the medication that my dog is on? (E.g. renal, thyroid, cardiac, hepatic, urinary, diabetic medications)

Always consult with your veterinarian regarding your dog's diet, especially as it relates to their individual health, including any medical conditions, medications, and procedures.

Is SmartyPaws 100% Natural? Why or why not?

SmartyPaws are made with premium ingredients. But they are not 100% natural, and for good reason. When we formulate our products, for humans or dogs, we want to use the best possible ingredients, and ingredient forms, in order to make the ideal health supplement.

In the vitamin world, if a product contains any synthetic or synthetic component ingredients, it cannot be called natural.

This is tough because while “100% natural” has a nice ring to it, it’s more important to us that we include ingredients in our product that are of the highest quality, contributing to the overall health of your dog

Sometimes, that means using synthetic ingredients, which can be more stable than their natural counterparts.

For example, SmartyPaws are made with some natural ingredients like organic turmeric, organic chia seeds and natural flavors, but they’re also made with synthetic ingredients like MSM.

How do I give it to my dog?

As with any change to your dog's diet, gentle is the best way!

Give 1 chew for the first week and increase until full dose is reached. You can also follow the Directions for Use on your SmartyPaws pouch to know when, and how many chews to give your dog based on their size and stage.

Always consult with your veterinarian regarding your dog’s diet.

What defines a puppy, adult or senior dog?

We formulate our SmartyPaws chews based on the following stages:

  • Puppy: 3 - 12 months
  • Adult: 1 - 7 years
  • Senior: 7+ years

If you don’t use peanuts, then how is the flavor peanut butter?

The peanut butter flavor in our SmartyPaws chews comes from an all-natural proprietary flavor blend that dogs love, but we took allergies into account. So, our formulas do not contain any of the following: soy, peanuts, wheat, beef, chicken, eggs, tree nut allergens, dairy, synthetic colors or synthetic flavors.

Is SmartyPaws peanut free and safe for homes with nut allergies?

That's a great question! The answer is that SmartyPaws is peanut-free as well as free of wheat, beef, chicken, eggs, tree nut allergens, dairy and synthetic colors and flavors.

We know that dogs love the flavor of peanut butter so we created a proprietary peanut-like flavor made from natural ingredients that leaves out the actual peanuts. We wanted to avoid ingredients that were the leading allergens for dogs (and the humans that love those dogs).

We do want to make sure you are aware that SmartyPaws is made in a facility that produces products for other companies that could potentially contain allergens like peanuts.

Can a senior dog with no teeth chew these easily?

Yes, these chews are firm but will also crumble easily when chewed.

What type of fish do you use for your fatty acids?

We source our omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids from the whole bodies of anchovies, sardines and mackerel.

What will this do for my dog?

SmartyPaws multifunctional health supplements were customized by size and stage to help maintain good health for your canine cohabitant throughout their life. Our multifunctional formulas were designed by vets and made with premium ingredients to support your dog’s hip, joint, gut, immune, allergy, skin, urinary tract and thyroid health - all in one easy serving.

Probiotics or prebiotics?

We’ve got probiotics! SmartyPaws contain a type of bacteria called Bacillus coagulans, which supports immune function and gut health.

We include probiotics that are naturally-encapsulated with a 95% survivability rate to ensure the stability of our chews and that they can withstand harsh stomach conditions.

Is this safe to give my pet after surgery and/or in recovery?

Always consult with your veterinarian regarding your dog's diet, especially as it relates to their individual health, including any medical conditions, medications, and procedures.

Will this interfere with the allergy medication that my dog is on?

Always consult with your veterinarian regarding your dog's diet, especially as it relates to their individual health, including any medical conditions, medications, and procedures.

When will I see improvement in my pet's joints with your product?

SmartyPaws includes omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids (from fish oil), glucosamine, chondroitin, green-lipped mussel, MSM and bromelain to promote joint health. Because every dog is different, always consult with your veterinarian regarding their health and diet.

What happens if my puppy eats the senior chews?

Safety is our biggest concern. While we don’t put anything in our products that could be harmful in large doses, we can't guarantee the safety of our product above the recommended serving size.

If your puppy has taken above the recommended serving and you see any negative symptoms, contact your veterinarian and be sure to let us know at Woof@SmartyPawsHealth.com.

What age do I transition my puppy to adult? What about adult to senior?

We recommend transitioning your puppy to our Adult SmartyPaws chews when they are 1 year old. Seniors are defined as any dog 7 years and older.

These are our guidelines. We recommend always consulting with your veterinarian regarding your dog's diet.

Why was The Humane Society chosen as a partner? How does purchasing SmartyPaws benefit them?

Like our SmartyPants partnership with Vitamin Angels, we wanted to partner with an organization that had similar goals as us when it comes to animals.

As the largest non-profit animal protection organization, The Humane Society of the United States felt like the perfect fit.

They confront the largest national and international problems facing animals, which local shelters don’t have the reach or resources to take on. Their desire and ability to help on a global scale lines up perfectly with our mission of good health for the real world, all of it. That’s why we’re proud supporters of this amazing organization.

Is it made in the USA? Are the ingredients sourced in the USA?

SmartyPaws are made in the United States with globally-sourced ingredients.

Is it third-party lab tested?

Yes. Each batch is third-party lab tested for quality assurance.

Are SmartyPaws made in GMP-compliant facilities?

Yes. We are compliant with all GMP requirements.

Is it vegetarian or vegan? If not, what are the animal products?

No. SmartyPaws are not vegetarian or vegan because we include ingredients like green-lipped mussel, glucosamine from shellfish, chondroitin from pork, and EPA and DHA (fatty acids) from small fish to help support hip and joint health.

Is it chicken-free?

Yes. SmartyPaws does not contain chicken.

Is this okay to give with my dog's prescription diet? (Hills, Purina, Royal Canin)

Always consult with your veterinarian regarding your dog's diet, especially as it relates to their individual health, including any medical conditions, medications, and procedures.

Is it grain-free?

No, because our SmartyPaws multifunctional health supplements contain flaxseed. However, technically, flaxseed is a pseudo grain. Pseudo grains don’t come from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or other cereal grains, but they have a similar vitamin and mineral profile to grains.

They’re actually seeds from shrubs, plants or grass, like flaxseed. They’re also gluten-free. So, technically, we could say that our products are grain-free because there’s no regulation on this terminology. But we want to be transparent and let consumers know exactly what’s inside our formulas. If you’re concerned about maintaining a grain-free diet for your dog, make sure to check other brand labels for this as some may indicate that they’re grain-free when they actually include flaxseed.

What is MSM?

MSM is well-known in the dog supplement world as being a superstar ingredient, but most people don’t know what these three letters mean. MSM or methylsulfonylmethane is a naturally-occurring form of sulfur found in a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and grains.

However, like many other supplement companies, we use a synthetic form of MSM because it allows us to have more control over the purity, potency and stability of this ingredient.

We include MSM because it helps enhance good hip and joint health. It also helps support the structural integrity of joints and connective tissues, promotes cartilage development and eases joint stiffness due to normal daily exercise and activity, among other health benefits.

What does your NASC certification mean?

SmartyPaws is certified by the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC).

In order to use the NASC Quality Seal, we had to undergo a rigorous third-party audit by the NASC to ensure we follow Good Manufacturing Processes (GMPs), something we’re an expert on.

These GMPs are a series of very stringent quality control rules based on dietary supplement manufacturing guidelines that the NASC adjusts to address supplements made for pets. A non-profit trade organization, the NASC has strict guidelines for quality assurance, labeling and reporting of any adverse events. They set a high standard for how supplements are manufactured to safeguard the health of the consumer (your precious pup).

This certification lets you know we’re committed to the highest current standards of quality in the pet health supplement industry today. Look for the NASC Quality Seal on our SmartyPaws pouches.
